Tourists who are citizens or permanent residents of the United
States need only carry proof of their status in case they should be asked. This would be
birth, baptism, or voters certificate; naturalization certificates; or Alien Registration
Receipt Card.
Temporary visitors to the United States, who wish to visit Canada,
must obtain a Canadian non-immigrant visa from the Canadian Consulate in one of 12 major
U.S. cities.
Minors under 18 years of age, not traveling with their parents, must
carry a letter of permission from either their parents or guardian.
PET PAPERS
Dogs and cats may be taken across the border providing that a Rabies
Vaccination Certificate, not more than 36 months old, is in the owners possession. The
certificate should bear a legible and adequate description of the animal.
VEHICLE PAPERS
The entry of vehicles and trailers for touring, as long as the
period does not exceed 12 months, is usually a quick, routine matter with any necessary
permits issued right at the port of entry. However, a tourist should always carry the
motor vehicle registration form, or if the vehicle is rented, a rental contract
stipulating authorized for use in Canada. If the car is not registered in the traveler's
name, it is suggested that a letter of authorization from the owner accompany the
registration.
Motorists are also advised to obtain a Canadian Non-resident
Interprovince Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card. The card is available only in the
United States through U.S. insuring agents. All provinces require visitors to show
financial responsibility should they be involved in an accident.
RADIO EQUIPMENT
Radio transmitting equipment operators who have an amateur station
license issued by the United States, or citizens of the United States who operate CB
radios, are authorized to operate their stations while in Canada. Amateur radio operators
and CB radio operators must comply with the Canadian regulations when operating in
Canada. American operators of mobile telephone radio units are authorized to use their
mobile telephones while in Canada.
FIREARMS & FISHING TACKLE
Firearms are highly restricted but fishing tackle is not. For
information regarding hunting and fishing in Canada, contact the capital of the province
or provinces within which you intend to travel prior to entering Canada. Failure to comply
with the firearms regulations can result in seizure and the possibility of criminal
charges being levied.
DUTY FREE LIMITS
Each U.S. resident who has been in Canada 48 hours may bring into
the United States, duty free, articles for personal or household use and not intended for
resale based on a fair retail value of $400 if they have not claimed the exemption during
the preceding 30 days. A flat rate of duty (10%) will be applied to the next $600 worth
(fair retail value) of merchandise if this benefit has not been claimed within the 30 day
period preceding arrival. Persons not eligible for the $400 exemption may be entitled to a
$25 exemption for gifts or articles for personal or household use. Consult Customs
Officials about special regulations governing the importation of alcoholic beverages
and tobacco.
HAPPY TRAVELING
Crossing into Canada is usually without delay. However, play it safe
and have all papers in order in case spot checks are being made and all of the questions
are asked.
