Welcome to Wheelers Guides

CONTENTS

This guide is divided into two parts. The body, which is the campground reference section, is on the black and white and Arabic numbered pages. The states and provinces are presented in alphabetical order and within each, keytowns are listed in alphabetical order. The town head will also show a map grid code referring to the location of that town on the map placed at the beginning of the state or province. The maps are not intended as highway maps, but as area locators for campgrounds and parks in the general vicinity. The last pages in this reference section contain a list of the same campgrounds and parks that are listed under their keytowns, but this time they are listed alphabetically by name within their state or province. This tool makes it possible to locate a campground if you know its name but not its exact location.

The United States is listed first, then Canada and/or Mexico. A look at the Search by Maps will tell you the exact states and provinces included in this guide. The Table of Contents is in the other part of this guide. It is here that general information articles are provided on travel, camping nomenclature and courtesy, and tips. It is well worth the reading. Now back to some helpful tips on using the reference part of this guide.

FACILITY TYPE

The camper has as many different preferences of facilities as there are types of facilities offered. An attempt has been made to put these into three classifications for the privately owned enterprise: CG in the listing for a campground. RV denotes a recreational vehicle resort and MH tells you that the sites are for overnight or longer in a mobile home park. However, when a mobile home park has a special section designed for recreational vehicles, it is then identified as an RV.

A general statement is that the campground emphasizes nature and would be less apt to have extensive manufactured refinements. Both, however, will have facilities to accomodate the recreational vehicles and the listing information will tell you to what extent.

The publicly owned facilities listed in this guide are not rated or classified in the margin. For easy identification they are printed in light face capitals. Letters follow the name of the park to tell you the general governing body: CP means a county or city park, SP is a state park, SF a state forest, and PP a provincial park. NP and NF says it is a national park and national forest respectively. COE is the Corp of Engineers and BLM is the Bureau of Land Management.

For privately-owned campgrounds, the listing will display "This is an open-to-the-public, privately-owned" and then one of these three categories:
  • CG = Campground
  • RV = Recreational Vehicle Resort
  • MH = Mobile Home Park, these sites allow for overnight or longer stays

For Federal, State, County or City owned campgrounds, the listing will display "This is a public" and then one of these categories:
  • BLM = Bureau of Land Management
  • COE = Corp of Engineers
  • CP = city or county management
  • NF = National Forest System
  • NP = National Park System
  • PP = (Canada) Provincial Park
  • SF = State Forest System
  • SP = State Park System

RATINGS

There always has been and always will be controversy over ratings. The stars in this program are intended only for a guide. (No attempt is made to rate public parks- only privately owned.) This year we have entered rating data from several sources: a field force, the parks and campgrounds and campers. (If you wish to become a VIP Wheelers Reporter, fill in the Wheelers market questionnaire form on this site and a VIP application will be sent to you with your bumper strip. Always keep firmly in mind that each category; CG, RV and MH has its own rating structure. For instance; a beautiful natural setting scores high for a CG (campground), while full hookups and level sites score high for an RV (recreational vehicle resort), and convenient access from major throughfares gives an overnight stop at an MH (mobile home park) points. As a courtesy to the parks, Wheelers also displays the Woodalls and TL Directory ratings when it is provided by the campground owner or manager.
